Code128 handles letters and numbers and is the usual pick for internal inventory and shipping. EAN-13 and UPC-A are for retail products sold in shops and require a registered company prefix. Code39 is older but widely supported by legacy scanners.

For testing, yes — the tool will generate anything structurally valid. For products sold in shops you need a genuine prefix issued by GS1, otherwise your code may collide with another company’s product.

The last digit of an EAN or UPC is calculated from the others so scanners can detect misreads. Enter 12 digits for an EAN-13 and the correct check digit is added for you.

Usually it is printed too small, at too low a resolution, or with insufficient contrast. Print at 300 DPI or higher, keep the bars pure black on white, and leave clear space either side.
